Daniela De Jesus case study

During February half term I did work experience in Salamanca, Spain with 39 other British students which was organised through a company called Halsbury.

I worked for 7 hours a day in a chocolate shop called Chocolatería Valor and my responsibilities included greeting Spanish-speaking customers, taking orders, serving food, preparing coffee and washing dishes.

My boss and colleagues were extremely friendly and welcoming, and communicated with me in Spanish in order to help me improve my language skills.

At first I was very nervous when speaking to customers, but as the week progressed, so did my confidence and I began to enjoy the tasks I was given.

After work we had the opportunity to socialise with students on the programme, as well as meeting others from around the globe, many of whom I will stay in contact with.

During the day we explore the city in between shifts and in the evenings interacted with native speakers which benefited my language development. Halsbury organised activities such as tours which were informative and interesting.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Salamanca. I had a lot of fun and would definitely do it again.

I highly recommend participating in Halsbury’s Work Experience Abroad programme to students who want to improve their speaking, as I have gained confidence and a better understanding of spoken Spanish by being totally immersed in the language. This is good preparation for my A2 exams at the end of the year.
